Teenager 'using Snapchat speed filter while driving' sued after crash left victim with brain damage

A teenager is being taken to court after allegedly using Snapchat while driving in the moments before a tragic crash that left the other motorist with brain damage.

Christal McGee is accused of using the app's 'speed filter' while behind the wheel.

The filter means that when the image is sent out to followers, it informs pals of how quickly the user was moving at the time the image was taken.

And in the moments after the crash McGee, 18, posted an image of her injuries.

She captioned the picture: "Lucky to be alive".

The other driver, Wentworth Maynard, needs round-the-clock care from his family as a result of the incident.

Wentworth's wife Karen said: "We used to sit on the sofa and watch TV in the evening, and Wentworth would hug me.

"Now, he can't do that any more."

After the incident McGee and the other passengers in her vehicle were taken to hospital but were only treated for minor injuries.

Mr Maynard's family, from Georgia in the United States, are also targeting Snapchat in their court action.

It is claimed that the popular app's 'speed filter' is dangerous and promotes speeding alongside dangerous driving.

In court papers their lawyer said: "This is a product liability case because Snapchat put something very dangerous in the marketplace without any warnings or safeguards.

"McGee wanted to post an image of herself going fast."

It was claimed that McGee said after the incident that she was "just trying to get the car to 100 miles per hour to post it on Snapchat".

Snapchat denies the filter encourages dangerous driving.

The tech giant responded to the court action with a statement that read: "No snap is more important than someone's safety.

"We actively discourage our community from using the speed filter while driving, including by displaying a 'Do not Snap and Drive' warning message in the app itself."
